Benadryl belongs to the family
of antihistamine medicines. It
is prescribed to treat allergic
reactions caused a naturally
occurring chemical compound
called histamine. Benadryl can
also be used against colds,
sneezing, coughs, and other
respiratory irritations caused
by seasonal allergies.
To be safe however, you need to
ask your doctor regarding the
correct Benadryl dosage that is
good for you.
The right Benadryl dosage can
only be given by your doctor. If
you take Benadryl, you will feel
its benefits in 1 hour. A one
dose of Benadryl can give you
relief for five to six hours.
Adults are suggested to take 25
mg to 50 mg of Benadryl as their
standard amount. The potency of
your dosage will be determined
based on the level of your
allergies. You have to take the
medicine 3 to 4 times a day. If
you want to use Benadryl as a
sleep inducer, you need to take
a 50 mg capsule just before you
sleep.
Children can also use Benadryl.
Of course, children should get
lower doses of Benadryl. Doctors
usually administer 12 mg to 25
mg of Benadryl for children
under this age group. The
medicine should also be taken 3
to 4 times daily. As a
precaution, children belonging
to this age group should not
take more than 300 mg of
Benadryl in one day.
Doctors normally don’t prescribe
Benadryl for children under the
age of 12. This age group also
should not take Benadryl as a
sleep inducer drug.
In general, the correct Benadryl
dosage for your condition should
be prescribed by a doctor. There
are various factors that will be
noted when administering
Benadryl. Considerations as to
your age, weight and your over
all medical conditions are
factored in. So it is really
best to consult a doctor before
deciding to take Benadryl
medication.
